About the Burr Oak Farm Flock
![]() |
Our flock consists of 30 Border Leicester crosses with Lincoln, Romney and Coopworth genetics. It is a healthy flock that is raised in a pasture-based system. The flock spends most of the year on pasture, only being in the barn from shearing until the grass grows enough for grazing. Lambs are raised on pasture and only receive grain for finishing. |

We make a conscious effort to produce quality handspinning fleeces. Attention is paid to proper diet for the ewes, the pastures are kept free of burrs and weed seeds, and winter feeding of hay is managed so as, as much as possible, prevent contamination of the fleece. Helena, shown to the left is a Lincoln cross ewe representative of one of the white-face ewes in our flock. |

We also have some colored ewes in the flock. The color range
is from white to black with some brown and silver fleeces. We
select for wool quality rather than color. In 2003 we used a Coopwurth ram on some of the flock. Shown to the left are one of the lambs resulting from that mating. The ewe in front is a canditate for entering our ewe flockwith a very good fleece and has shown good growth. The Coopworth genes were added to the flock in order to produce a softer wool while maintaining the characteristics we have selected for over the years. |
